Bildungsroman relates to the 'Catcher in the Rye' because the protagonist, Holden Caulfield is coming of age and is experiencing many struggles within society. In this case it seems that he just doesn't understand society and blames other people for things that go wrong. However, this also relates to the author J.D.Sallinger who is more similar to Holden than you think. With some research on the background of the book i discovered that Sallinger too did struggle with schools and grades, that he also was born and raised in Manhattan and Holden's opinion on going to help with the war. Which was that he hates it and wouldn't go out there ever. The connection that i discovered was that Sallinger himself went out to fight and was reported home due to a combat stress reaction. Sallinger was using the book to convey his feelings towards things. Another example is Holden's hatred towards Hollywood, this is because Sallinger's first love went and got married with Charlie Chapman.
So bildungsroman is a major theme in the book and i found it very interesting because knowing a term and talking about it made the book more clear for me. It then sparked more ideas and more understanding about 'The Catcher in the rye'. I don't particularly enjoy this book but i find the connections between the book and the context very interesting. It is very strange, and because it is so strange might be the reason why it is so famous.
